Flange Binding and or Two Tone Binding.

As most of you are aware, I will be
giving a demo on September 26th on how to do "flange" binding. This
is actually a two tone binding, and is all done by machine, so no hand sewing.
For those of you that want to
participate, here are the beginning directions, and requirements.
Firstly, your own finished project,
except for the binding. I would suggest that you do either a placemat, or
table centre to keep it small, and to see if you like it or not.
-Measure, how you normally do,
including your allowance for how long your binding will need to be.
Difference here is that you will be doing two pieces, instead of one, but each
piece must be the length you require, and joined if necessary.
-Flange is referred to as the small
border visible on the front. I have attached a scanned picture to show
you. If your background is light you will want to cut your flange out of
a darker fabrice, or it will not show up. If your background is dark you
will want to make your flange out of light fabric. On the picture the top
placemat, shows a dark green flange, and then the light outside. On the
bottom picture you can clearly see that the flange does not show up very
well. A suggestion also is not to make your binding out of directional,
as again you can see on the pictures, that where fabric joins it is almost
impossible to line up.
-Okay now once you have picked your
flange color cut this piece to the length you need and cut it 1 1/2" wide.
-Make another piece the same
length, but make it 1 1/4" wide and have it either a darker or lighter
than your flange.
This is all you will need to bring
to quilting, but please make sure you have the length you need of each piece,
even if you have to join two pieces together.
This is a real fun way to do
binding, and adds real interest to your project!
